PUY MARY
Petit Futé's opinion on PUY MARY

With its pyramidal shape recognizable from afar, it is a bit like the Fujiyama of Auvergne. The puy Mary is one of the emblematic summits of the Cantal mountains even if it is not the highest (1 783 m). And for good reason, with its 2,700m2, it is the largest volcano in Europe... It is therefore impossible to pass through the Cantal without going to visit this strato-volcano which, in its heyday, rose to more than 3,500 m in altitude!
You can reach its summit from the Pas de Peyrol pass where it is possible to park your vehicle and after a chaotic walk by a staircase of 190 m of difference in level. However, be careful, the access roads to the Pas de Peyrol may be closed depending on the weather conditions. (To know the state of the roads on the department: inforoute15.fr)
The Auvergne Volcanoes Natural Park offers discovery outings. You can discover the diversity of its landscapes where steep rocky ridges, high altitude forests and plains rich in fauna and flora follow one another. All this offers a grandiose spectacle! Take advantage of a hike, horseback ride or mountain bike ride, or a session of free flight, canyoning or climbing to discover it. There are 34 hiking trails to discover and even two GR! You will also find an important number of traditional buildings of the region. You will be able to admire the different valleys which leave in star, but also, if you are lucky, to see on its slopes chamois and marmots. In winter, it is an ideal spot for downhill skiing.

Bon courage Jean Paul
