Museum preserving a beautiful collection of time-measuring instruments, in the former clock factory of the 19th century in Cluses.
Located along the banks of the Arve River, in the former 19th-century clock factory, the museum takes us on a historical journey through the techniques and objects that have enabled us to measure time with ever-greater precision. A journey from astronomy to watchmaking, through some remarkable exhibits! Admire the time-measuring instruments that have been preserved here over the years and through technological advances: sun rings, sun dials, a candle alarm clock and an oil clock. You'll discover the history of the watch, from its first appearances around 1500, hanging from the neck, to those worn by our grandfathers in their fobs, as well as a bell tower clock and cartels. Until 1989, Cluses was home to the École royale puis nationale d'horlogerie, founded in 1848 and transformed into a technical high school in 1960. A room retraces the first steps of the screw-cutting industry, which consists of manufacturing small parts in series by turning or machining. The screw was the first part produced. Today, bar turning supplies parts to a wide range of industrial sectors (automotive, luxury goods, etc.). Cluses has become a world-class center in this field. Numerous visits and workshops are organized throughout the year (role-playing games and dramatized tours). A very dynamic museum, with activities for the whole family, including the very young. There's also a small store selling illustrated and historical books.
