In 1385, a fire devastated almost all of the city. The Earl of Savoy Amedeo VII then closed walls, a 3 doors breakthrough. The square was located outside the ramparts. It was the place of fairs and markets, but also of festivals, which it has always preserved. The fountain dates back to 1864. The last arcades around the square disappeared in 1883.
