TOULON PROVENCE MÉDITERRANÉE OPERA
The Grand Théâtre, a neoclassical building in the heart of Toulon, has been offering a rich and varied program for over 150 years.
Operas, symphonic concerts, ballets and plays: the Toulon Opera offers a rich and varied program in a building classified as a historical monument. The Grand Théâtre was inaugurated on October1, 1862. Built as part of the city's expansion plan (1853), it replaced the Salle de la Comédie, which dated back to 1770, in order to offer a larger and more modern theater to Toulon society. Designed by the architect Léon Feuchères, the building occupies a floor space of 27 x 70 meters, or nearly 2,000m2, between a specifically designed square and the brand new boulevard Louis-Napoléon (now boulevard de Strasbourg). From an architectural point of view, it is distinguished by a monumental façade in the neoclassical style, with semicircular arches, grey and pink columns and geometric friezes of Byzantine inspiration on its pediment. If the success was immediate for what was then the largest opera house in the province, it has never been denied over the years. In order to attract an even larger audience, the management has put the emphasis on musicals and offers many original initiatives, starting with a sound and light show during the end of year celebrations. In addition, since 2022, the Foyer Campra has been restored to its former glory. This emblematic opera house now hosts opera performances and initiatives for young audiences.
