American Cemetery and Memorial of the Rhone gathering the graves of 861 American soldiers who died during the fighting in 1944
The Rhone American Cemetery and Memorial is the only American necropolis in the South of France. It was created by Dr. Angelin German, a great resistance fighter from the Var region, during the liberation of Draguignan by the 551st American Battalion. It honours the allied landing of August 15, 1944 called "Operation Anvil Dragoon", recounted on an impressive bronze relief map, created by Bruno Béarzi. It contains the graves of 861 American soldiers, including 62 unknown, who died during the fighting in 1944.
