The town was named after the rich Roman Draconius at a time when Draguignan was an important road junction, at the crossroads of two roads linking Fréjus to Riez, and Aix to Grasse. An important military garrison controlled the whole area. Around the city, the city developed in a star shape with its roads leading to the ramparts and the city gates. In 1797, Draguignan obtained the prefecture of the Var, refused to Toulon for having surrendered to the English in 1793. This led to the construction of a large theatre, a courthouse and a prison. With the military camp of Canjuers, Draguignan is the largest garrison in France.
