THE DEPARTMENTAL MUSEUM
A museum located in Gap, revealing the graphic works of the century, hosting many exhibitions of contemporary art
Entirely free of charge for all publics, the Departmental Museum has an encyclopedic vocation. It was originally built around a natural history donation. A collection constituted in the 18th-19th centuries by two scientists of the region which presents naturalized plants and birds. But the important permanent collections of the Museum Museum offer a wide range. Moreover, it is possible that some pieces are not exposed during your visit in a living place which does not stop moving. Presented in the vaulted basements, the archaeology collection traces the history of human occupation in the Alps from prehistory to the Middle Ages. Paintings from the 14th to the 19th centuries make up the Fine Arts collection. The museum also displays graphic works from the 20th century with the work of Lucien-Achille Mauzan. The sculpture collection consists mainly of works by Jean Esprit Marcellin. The ethnography section explores the traditions of the Queyras with beautiful objects and wooden furniture. Valuing current art, the museum hosts many exhibitions of contemporary art. It is also a place of meetings and exchanges, cultural events around the plastic arts and the living arts. The museum offers a wide range of exhibitions and activities that will meet the varied expectations of a curious public eager for knowledge. It is also the link with the ecomuseums, sites and monuments of the Hautes-Alpes.
