The great synagogue of Marseille is the oldest in the city. It was inaugurated in 1864, at the same time as Major's Cathedral. Its characteristic style, known as Romano-Byzantine, is a reference to the origins of the faithful who come to gather here (the very cosmopolitan Jewish community of Marseille is mainly Mediterranean). The facade, which you can enjoy from the street, is surrounded by two pavilions. Three oratories are represented here: one for Ashkenazi in Eastern Europe, one for Levantines and a third for Jews in North Africa.
