HOTEL DE CABRE
Hotel built in 1735 in Louis XII and Renaissance styles, known as the oldest house in Marseille, to be admired from the outside
The Hôtel de Cabre, built in 1535, is considered (rightly) as the oldest house in Marseille. It is built by mixing Louis XII and Renaissance styles. Commissioned by Consul Louis de Cabre, this corner building miraculously was safe from the destruction of the old quarters in 1943. In 1954, during the reconstruction of the Saint-Jean district, the building was rotated and moved 90 degrees to align with the new modern plan of the district. A technical feat made possible by a sophisticated set of rails placed under the building. The house cannot be visited, but can be admired from the outside, testifying to the rich historical past of the Panier district.
