Marseille may not be famous for its carnival, but every May, the Old Port comes alive with colorful parades.

The Carnaval de Marseille brings a new vibrancy to the Vieux-Port as soon as the warm weather returns in May. With entertainment for young and old, a grand parade and shows, it's a festive atmosphere that embraces France's oldest city, in a city with no great carnival tradition. And yet, over the years, the event has found its audience, with topical themes chosen and given pride of place. The grand finale of the carnival is held in front of the town hall, where the official presentation of the key to the city takes place.
