LA BASTIDE AUX VIOLETTES
An attractive, well-preserved memorial to the way violets were grown and used in Tourrettes-sur-Loup.
The Victoria violet, emblem of Tourrettes-sur-Loup since 1880, blooms from mid-October to mid-March. La Bastide aux Violettes, nestled in a green setting, is much more than a museum: it's a living, poetic and sensory place where you can discover the history and secrets of this delicate flower. Inside, you'll learn about traditional cultivation methods, the work of growers and the many uses of violets in perfumery and gastronomy. Outside, the new landscaped garden, the fruit of an ambitious project undertaken by the commune and the Communauté d'agglomération Sophia Antipolis (€1.2 million), covers more than 6,000 m². Here, visitors can stroll between olive trees, through green lounges, along a sculpture trail, or around the open-air amphitheatre. Children enjoy the play areas, while visitors can picnic in the shade. This intergenerational, eco-responsible site (90% plant cover, local materials, sustainable water management) also hosts workshops, events and guided tours all year round. In winter, don't miss a visit to the flowering greenhouses, which exude the discreet, bewitching scent of violets. The reception pavilion can be used to organize cultural events or receptions in a natural, elegant setting. Highlights of the year include the Fête des Violettes on the last weekend of February, recently named one of France's "Most Beautiful Festivals". La Bastide becomes the beating heart of the village, a place where tradition, local pride and tradition are passed on.
