GLOZEL MUSEUM
This unusual museum in the Montagne Bourbonnaise has been the talk of the town for over a hundred years.
One of the oldest in Bourbonnais, celebrating its centenary this year. Around a hundred people accepted the invitation from the Fradin family, the commune and Vichy Communauté to launch the festivities. Frédéric Aguilera, President of Vichy Communauté, recalled the importance of the Glozel site to the region. Nearly 3,000 objects have been excavated since 1924. According to the first analyses at the time, they would indicate a Neolithic alphabet, disputing the place and date of the discovery of writing. In 1927, an international commission of recognized scholars began excavations and concluded that the site was a hoax. In 1928, a Comité d'Études concluded that the site was authentic. Émile Fradin, who discovered the site while ploughing his field, was at the heart of the controversy. Accused of having invented his find, he appeared several times before the courts on suspicion of forgery and fraud. In the 1980s, further excavations were carried out to no avail. The objects were classified into three categories. Animal bones with utilitarian objects (needles, arrowheads, harpoons, daggers, etc.) and artistic objects (rings, necklaces, etc.). Engravings and sculptures of animals, three human representations and a few plant motifs. Second category: stone objects. Polished stone axes, engraved pebbles, necklaces, rings featuring deer, cats and cattle. Last category: terracotta objects. Inscribed tablets, idols, vases and urns with mouthless faces, coils, lamps, handprints.
