Castle with all the architectural features of the early 17th, simplicity and sobriety
Originally, a castellaras, a fortified enclosure dating back to the Iron Age, existed at the top of the hill that today houses the village. In the 12th century, the lords of Opio decided to erect a castle in place of this castellaras, this being the highest site in their fiefdom. The site was first mentioned in 1153. On the occasion of a reconciliation between the Bishop of Antibes and the Abbey of Lérins, Castello Novo is mentioned. Other mentions include Castrum de Castello and Castro Novo. Later, the inhabitants of Opio settled on the site, seeking the castle's protection. The site became known as Châteauneuf d'Opio. During the 12th and 13th centuries, the region was marked by the takeover of Provence by new counts of Catalan origin. Nice, Opio and Châteauneuf fell into the hands of the Catalan counts. In 1257, Châteauneuf d'Opio separated from Opio. The present building was erected by Baron du Puget on the ruins of the former fortified castle in 1625. The château displays all the architectural characteristics of the early 17th century: simplicity and sobriety. The three-storey building is built around a double facade. The château is not open to the public.
