CRUELLA TOWER
The Cruella Tower, accessible on foot, whose remains dominate the city, was a vigilant guardian of the village of Breil-sur-Roya.
In the Middle Ages, the city was surrounded by ramparts. This tower, whose remains dominate the city, is named after the birds of prey of the Cruella (a kind of hawk) that nested in the hollows of the rocky ridge on which the Counts of Ventimiglia built it when they took possession of it in the middle of the 10th century. This name of Turris Cruellam appears in the 1258 charter by which the Count of Provence became Master of Breil. Throughout the centuries and until June 1940, she was a vigilant guardian of the village. That is why it appears in the arms of the municipality. The Cruella tower is within walking distance from the village. It takes about 30 minutes to walk. Follow boulevard Rouvier, then take rue Ciappera. About 200 m further on the left (beacon 4) is the start of the path that winds up in bends to the tower.
