Listed as a historic monument and winner of the Heritage Lottery, the fortress stands amidst the vines. Owned by Sandra and Gilles Colinet, it is currently being restored in an eco-responsible manner. The 13-hectare vineyard is farmed organically. Its exceptional tuffeau terroir enables it to produce wines of ageing potential and character, which are expressed under the Saumur and Saumur Puy-notre-dame appellations.

La Forteresse de Berrye is a winegrowing estate set majestically in the heart of the vineyards. Listed as a historic monument, it offers structured, richly aromatic wines that reflect the terroir of its long history as a fortress. In its fine selection, you'll discover Saumur rouge A.O.C. 2019, Crémant de Loire A.O.C. 2015, Saumur blanc A.O.C. 2021, and many more. These wines are made in our troglodytic cellars, where they improve over the years, allowing you to keep them for a long time. To offer you quality wines, La Forteresse de Berrye adopts an environmentally-friendly approach to production, implementing agroforestry, beekeeping and hosting a small flock of Ouessant sheep on the estate. The owner of The Forteresse de Berrye was very welcoming when we made contact to ask if we could see around. There is a huge undertaking in place to renovate the buildings here but the story is quite extraordinary. Limestone is quarried from grounds beneath the vineyard and we were able to see the remarkable and painstaking transformation that is in progress. We finished our visit with Simon who hosted the wine tasting in a beautiful hall and were able to sample the fine wines of Berrye. A very interesting and enjoyable afternoon but do make arrangements in advance if you want to see around the Fortress.
