The seat of power of the Sires and Dames de Bourbon, the château has its origins in an 8th-century castrum. Of its fifteen 14th-century towers, the three on the northern front were saved by Achille Allier. They each feature three rib-vaulted rooms, as well as an underground cistern for the north-west tower, two surrounding towers, part of the curtain walls and the fortified mill. Outside the northern front, you can visit the famous Tour Quiquengrogne de Bourbon, which commands the square to the south and whose name evokes the opposition of the town's inhabitants when Louis II undertook to have it built at the end of the 14th century. If you have the time, why not take the Gélis-Didot tour, which takes in the whole site and ends with a panorama of the three towers overlooking the town and the Bourbon countryside. The 16th-century canons' house can be visited at the same time as the Quiquengrogne tower. There are several ways to discover this emblematic site, both guided and unguided.
