A site where you can discover the techniques of metallurgy and coinage from the to the century.
The oldest visitable silver mines in the world, exploited from the 7th to the 10th century. You explore the depths of the mining network (350 m of the 30 km of galleries uncovered) in search of a vein of galena, discover the techniques of metallurgy and coinage in use at the time. Two fascinating 3D films tell you all about it! The museum has its own Carolingian medicinal garden as well as an experimental archaeological platform for the arts of fire (CNRS agreement).

melloise depuis dix ans, c'est le site que je fais visiter aux amis de passage et jusqu'à maintenant personne n'a été déçu. c'est une visite guidée passionnante avec une vidéo explicative avant le passage dans les mines dont une infime partie est visitable. si la mine n'est pas vraiment remarquable, les explications elles, le sont et quand on arrive sur l'extérieur il y a une partie ou différents fourneaux ont été reconstitué pour nous montrer comment on passait du minerai brut mêlant plomb et argent à l'argent pur. le jardin carolingien est également à voir et en été il y a également des animations proposées sur certains jours
