L’ABBAYE DE FONTDOUCE
Nestled between Saintes and Burie in a preserved natural setting, Fontdoux Abbey proudly displays its 900 years. Founded in 1111 by the Benedictines, it first knows a long period of prosperity during which a hundred monks live there. The sixteenth century religious wars then lead him down the path of decline, accelerating the Revolution. Sold as a national property, it is transformed into a wine farm. Its renaissance began in 1970, the date chosen by the owners to start a vast excavation and restoration program.
