NÉCROPOLE NATIONALE DE RÉTAUD

The Rétaud necropolis honors 330 soldiers who fell during the liberation of the Royan and Oléron pockets in 1945. Created by the Amicale des anciens des forces françaises du Sud-Ouest, it is home to combatants from a variety of backgrounds. A memorial commemorates their sacrifice, with an urn containing ashes from the Buchenwald concentration camp. The Atlantic Pockets, the last Nazi strongholds, were liberated after months of siege, marking the end of German resistance in France.
