CASSINOMAGUS ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK
It is only in 1958 that the excavations began on the archaeological site of Chassenon; the importance is such that the General Council of the Charente then decides to make it a high place of tourism in the department. The thermal baths of Chassenon have benefited from a very important financial effort so that the unique heritage which has been revealed for a little more than sixty years by enthusiasts can be highlighted. This archaeological site, considered to be one of the most beautiful in Europe, founded in the 1st century AD, was erected on the precise spot where, 200 million years ago, a meteorite fragment hit the earth. Built on the famous Agrippa road, linking Saintes to Lyon, via Limoges, the rural sanctuary of Chassenon was inhabited for nearly five centuries, then gradually abandoned. The site has been largely rehabilitated and today reveals all its secrets: remains of temples, a theatre and a forum and the magnificent pools of the thermal baths.
Throughout the year, the site organises events to bring the old stones back to life. These can be events dedicated to children (Halloween, escape games...) or lectures reserved for a public of archaeologists, historians or more informed enthusiasts. For the general public, concerts, shows or historical frescoes are also regularly scheduled: consult the website to see all the planned activities.
A voir absolument.
