Church built in the 12th century, with a painted wooden ceiling and trompe-l'oeil
The church of Saint-Martial de Chalais built in the 12th century has preserved from this period its façade, classified as a Historic Monument, a characteristic facade of Romanesque art very present in Charente with its many archivolts.
In 1569 the church was looted and burned, and will be rebuilt in the 16th century. At the present location of the organ stood the chapel of the Talleyrand-Périgord, princes of Chalais. The painted wooden and trompe l'oeil ceiling is worth a visit.
