GROTTE PÈRE DE MONTFORT
Grotto where Father Louis Marie Grignon de Montfort retired to meditate, became a popular place of pilgrimage after his death
An apostolic missionary, Father Louis Marie Grignon de Montfort led missions in the West in the aftermath of the Wars of Religion (rebuilding churches, reviving Christianity). He retired to this grotto in 1715 to meditate, returning whenever he could between missions. His last pilgrimage took him to Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre, where he died in 1716. Pius XII declared him a saint in 1947. After his death, the grotto became a popular place of pilgrimage. An unusual sight! Below, a chapel and reception area, restored by the parish.
