In the South Vendée, just 10 minutes from Fontenay-le-Comte, you're entering the largest forest in the Vendée! Its 5,000 hectares of unspoilt countryside are home to Mervent, a village perched on a rocky outcrop and surrounded by the River Mère. Its name comes from the Celtic "Maro Vidua", meaning the "Great Forest". A major witness to Mervent's medieval past, its castle dates back to the 11th century. Crossed by three rivers, the Mère, the Vendée and the Verreries, bridges have their importance. The oldest bridge dates back to the 12th century and is Romanesque in style, but is nowhere to be seen as it has been submerged by a dam. Head down to the Verreries stream to admire the Déluge bridge, 13.25 m high with its unique semi-circular arch. The particularly imposing Diet bridge, built in 1863, spans the Mère river in two arches. In this unique South Vendée landscape, just a stone's throw from Fontenay-le-Comte, the Mervent forest is a must-see! A paradise for walkers and sports enthusiasts of all kinds, from rocky outcrops to rivers, from clearings to lakes, everyone can indulge in the pleasures of climbing, fishing, botanical walks, mountain biking, canoeing, sailing or swimming at the leisure center. Indeed, the forest massif boasts no fewer than 20 hiking trails, 13 mountain bike trails and 5 equestrian trails... The routes are signposted and vary in difficulty!
