THE ROMAN MILESTONES

The commune's site was located on an ancient Roman road linking Le Mans to Vieux near Caen. On this territory, the Gauls extracted iron ore by means of numerous furnaces, which were unearthed during the construction of the freeway and of which you'll find a replica in the Carré Plantagenêt museum in Le Mans. It has to be said that, in those days, the need for iron had become very great, and much had to be produced to meet demand. The Romans, great champions of organization, lined the roads with milestones spaced one Gallic league apart (a little over 2.2 km). You'll still find them in Rue Bleuet and Rue Sauvagère.
