THE LION'S DEN
An impressive cellar in Fresnay-sur-Sarthe, it hosts art exhibitions and guided tours.
This cellar is located at the corner of Place Thiers and Ruelle du Lion, opposite the former baille du château. It is a former Templar crypt, an underground chapel dating from the 12th century. This large square room, with its four bays of ribbed vaulting and carved foliage capitals, was once used by Protestants as a place for preaching. Why the Lion's Cellar? In the 18th century, when it served as a warehouse for the neighboring Hôtelerie du Lion d'Or, the former chapel was given this name. Today, it hosts art exhibitions. Guided tours.
