L'ESCALIER DU JARDIN EXTRAORDINAIRE
A staircase with a 28-metre drop, 177 steps and 4 intermediate belvederes for breaks, leading to a beautiful view.
Access to the top of the Jardin Extraordinaire staircase is via Square Maurice Schwob. Once you're ready, you begin the descent at the foot of what was once the janitor's hut, now an ornate belvedere surrounded by a circular staircase. All in all, it's a 28-meter descent or ascent (for the bravest!), with 177 steps, and breaks made possible by the 4 intermediate lookouts. Along the way, take a seat on the "lovers' balcony", where the bench offers a backrest right on the rock. And admire the view! And what a view! Admire the Loire River and its quays, bearing the vestiges of its industrial past, the Cité des Ducs... This gigantic staircase links the Marcel Schwob park and the Jardin Extraordinaire in the Miséry quarry. Made of steel, it follows the granite face of the quarry. And that's how its creator, François Delarozière, artistic director of Les Machines de l'île, dreamed it up: a staircase set against the rocky mass, making it accessible in this way, and totally blending rock and metal, nature and technology, dream and reality. The sensory experience is complete: you can admire the view, breathe in the air of the Loire and touch the Sillon de Bretagne. The Jardin Extraordinaire staircase is also a journey into Nantes' geological heritage, as the granite from the Miséry quarry was laid down 310 million years ago, along a fault line that stretches from the Pointe du Raz to the Vendée. it's a magical place, without doubt the best vantage point from which to admire the Loire and feel the city of Nantes.
