NOTRE-DAME CHURCH

With its fortress-like appearance, the church of Villéreal and its two towers are one of the bastide's must-see sights.
As you approach Villeréal, you can make out its two tall turrets linked by a parapet walk. This fortress-church, built in 1267 when the bastide was created, served both as a place of worship and a refuge in case of attack. Once surrounded by a deep moat, it was only accessible via a drawbridge. One of the towers houses two chambers, including a former prison, while the other houses the clockwork. A fascinating example of buttressed Gothic architecture, listed as a Historic Monument.
