LES VITRAUX DE L'ÉGLISE SAINT MICHEL
The church of Saint-Michel, classified as a historical monument, with monochrome stained glass windows with intriguing and soothing designs
The parish church of Saint-Michel de Bonaguil was built in the 13th century, at the same time as the castle keep. All that remains of this medieval period is a few meters of wall at the base of the nave. Most of the building, in late Gothic style, was built at the instigation of Bérenger de Roquefeuille (1448-1530), whose tomb is in the chapel of Sainte-Barbe, on the left as you enter. Listed as a Monument Historique in 1963, the church underwent extensive restoration work between 2010 and 2014. But what really stands out on entering are the contemporary stained-glass windows, installed in 2014. Bewitchingly soft, they bathe the church in a singular pinkish light. Created by internationally renowned visual artist François Rouan - who is also responsible for the stained glass windows at Nevers Cathedral - they were made in the famous Simon-Marq workshops in Reims, known for their work with Chagall, Braque and Miró. Their rosy hues are obtained by projecting gold oxide onto blown glass. Decorated with curves, volutes and foliage, these stained glass windows with their abstract, soothing motifs form a striking, modern and mystical work, in perfect harmony with the soul of the place.
