This site is an ancient stronghold, home to the Ricard gate, named after the man who built it.
An ancient stronghold, Penne, nicknamed "la sanglante", was not easily conquered. In addition to being difficult to access due to its steep coastline, the town was surrounded by ramparts and protected by six defensive gates, three of which can still be seen today. To the south of the village, the Porte de la Ville is located on Place Gambetta. To the north, the infamous Porte de Ferracap was once used to display condemned prisoners. Further down the village, you can admire the Porte Ricard, the best preserved of the three and also the smallest.
