Visit the caves of Cougnac to dive into the heart of prehistory, and understand the meaning of the paintings

The two caves at Cougnac have been open to the public for almost fifty years. Combining natural curiosities and figurative drawings, these caves allow you to plunge (literally!) into the heart of prehistory. A 1h10 guided tour will help you understand the significance of the paintings, the use of the rooms, and visualize the men and women who appropriated the site nearly 25,000 years ago. The guide will also explain how the stalactites and stalagmites in the caves came to be, which today form natural arches and chandeliers.

Price: adults €8.50, children (aged 5 to 12) €6.

Duration: 1h10 guided tour.

Très belle expérience avec un guide passionné qui a pu nous expliquer tous les détails de ces magnifiques grottes et de ces peintures.
Nous avons été extrêmement chanceux de pouvoir partager cette expérience en tout petit comité et tout ceci nous a permis de nous rendre compte de la beauté de cet héritage si fragile.

An unexpected excellent experience with an excellent guide who admitted that we will be forever ignorant of the real motives for the cave art. He never the less pointed out the key features and skill employed by the creators and conveyed the story of their discovery. The second artless cave had interesting features too. All caves in the region have a distinct character and these are worth a visit. Personally I enjoyed these more than Lascaux.
