Museum of the deportation and the resistance, with exhibitions on the smugglers, installed in a former school in Tarbes.

The Musée de la Déportation et de la Résistance, set up in a former school by the Association des Déportés et Internés, retraces the history of the Second World War, including events in the Hautes-Pyrénées. With photographs, original objects from the camps and the Resistance and other documents, the museum offers a poignant insight into this period. One section is dedicated to the smugglers who helped those fleeing the Nazi regime to cross the Spanish border.

Small museum with lots of exhibits, pictures, documents and artefacts. Friendly staff. On our first visit we were treated to a guided tour by an extremely passionate and knowledgeable lady who led us through the first floor and explained (in clear but rapid French) all about the resistance in Tarbes and the deportation programme. Every time I visit, I find something I missed. The museum is not patched with modern interactive screens or 3d holograms but, is all the better for its detailed, methodical and sobering collection that is diligently displayed. Despite being a small museum, it can easily occupy much of a morning or afternoon. Definitely recommended, but probably less so if you're with small children.

Musée très simple et modeste. Ce musée relate la Grande Histoire à l'histoire locale : le parcours des résistants, celui des déportés, raconté par ceux qui l'ont vécue, les hommes et femmes de Bigorre, victimes ou acteurs de l'histoire.
