TOUR DE GAVARNIE
16.70 m high tower, one of the few remaining monuments to the city's fortifications, which numbered almost 12 gate towers, worth a visit
The 16.70m-high tower is one of the few remaining monuments to the town's fortifications. In the 17th century, the fortified enclosure included a dozen towers or tower-gates. Access was via a masonry staircase, the base of which still remains. At the time, the Gavarnie tower was known as the Tour de Guigne. Its strategic position enabled it to keep watch over the entire town. This monument, which has resisted urbanization, has been listed on the supplementary inventory of historic monuments since 1946.
