Grotte de Massabielle or grottes des apparitions, one of the most famous in the world, where the Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous.
The grotto at Massabielle is one of the most famous in the world. It was here that the Virgin Mary appeared 18 times to the young shepherdess Bernadette Soubirous. It was also here that the Virgin pointed out the miraculous spring to the saint. Surmounted by the Massabielle rock, the grotto extends 9.50 metres into the ground. The spring is at the far left, and feeds the basins and pools into which pilgrims in search of a miracle plunge. The grotto, also known as Grotte des Apparitions, receives no less than 6 million visitors a year!
