COLLEGIATE CHURCH OF SAINT-PIERRE DE LA ROMIEU
Visit the Collégiale Saint-Pierre de la Romieu, the brainchild of Arnaud d'Aux.
This splendid building, classified as a historic monument and a Unesco World Heritage Site, is without doubt one of the most beautiful buildings in the Gers. With its square and octagonal towers, its magnificence of the XIVth century imposes itself in the center of the village with an absolute splendor. The collegiate church is the fruit of the project of Arnaud d'Aux, a child of the village, son of a rich lord and who became over the years a very influential cardinal at the papal court of Clement V. In 1314, private consul to King Edward II of England, he undertook the construction of this patrimonial jewel. A cloister, whose sculpted Romanesque capitals can be appreciated, was added in 1320. The entrance to the north allows direct access, but this southern architectural ensemble is mainly accessed through the tourist office. It is then an incredible spectacle which awaits you, worthy of a voyage out of time. Between the arches, sculptures, painted walls and vaults of the church with a single nave, the ascent to the bell tower, its two octagonal towers, one of which contains a secret passage with a double revolution staircase, everything is absolutely masterly. On the way up, you can admire the frescoes in the sacristy which have been restored and which were previously only visible behind a grille. The walkway and the gardens remain mysterious, filled with a historical aura that makes you shiver. The view from the top, which extends to the horizon, is exceptional.
Le village très agréable est parfait pour prendre un verre après la visite ou y passer la nuit.
