THE DOMUS OF CIEUTAT - INTERPRETATION CENTRE

Between 2001 and 2012, excavations were carried out in Eauze on a 20-hectare archaeological reserve. They uncovered the remains of a domus. This peristyle house would have been built in the ^3rd century over an area of 1600m². A few years later, around the year 350, the owner decided to enlarge the house, bringing the total built area to 2700m². Slightly higher than the streets, the residence enjoys a dominant position in the aristocratic district in which it was built. It is organized around two peristyle courtyards, all of which surround the gardens. It has a small private spa area and a large reception room. The care taken by successive owners in decorating the house, particularly the floors and walls of the reception rooms, probably reflects their desire to show off their power and wealth. The domus is bordered along its north and east façades by porticoes or covered walkways. An interpretation center has been set up in the former Eauze railway station, at the entrance to the archaeological site. This space allows visitors to discover the extent of the ancient city of Elusa through a modern and entertaining scenography, and transports them to the heart of urban and rural life in Gallo-Roman times. Domus de Cieutat, villa de Séviac and the archaeological museum are brought together under the banner of ELUSA, Ancient Capital. New excavation campaigns take place regularly.
