We're in ancient Elusa, the city of the Elusates, the Aquitanian or proto-Basque people who fought against Julius Caesar's legions, before capitulating and becoming the capital of the province of Novempopulania. An important administrative city, it was one of the first bishoprics in France, as early as the5th century. Because of its wealth, the city was violently pillaged by the Vikings, and its episcopal see razed to the ground. With its cathedral, cloister and half-timbered houses, Eauze is steeped in history. Today, Eauze's main source of income is winegrowing and the Armagnac trade. Numerous festivals and festivities make it a lively town all year round.
