THE CASTLE OF FONDAT
This romantic building in the heart of the Landes region is distinguished by its neo-Renaissance style
In the heart of the Landes region, set against a 44-hectare forest, lies this exceptional romantic edifice, surrounded by a large park (4 ha) and listed as a Monument Historique since 1999. During your stay, stop off at the famous Château de Fondat, distinguished by its neo-Renaissance style. Located just two kilometers from the commune of Saint-Justin, on the way to Gabarret, the Fondat estate overlooks a small valley hidden in the woods. Built in the 17th century, this feudal château has passed through the hands of many families over the centuries. It was originally inhabited by a noble family from Marsan. It has undergone a number of alterations, having been destroyed twice. The first reconstruction took place in the mid-17th century, followed two centuries later by the neo-Renaissance style we know today. During your visit with the owner, you'll be sure to notice some exceptional features: a Médicis fountain, a 17th-century fish tank used as a fish reserve, a 17th-century dovecote (under reconstruction), an Armagnac cellar built at the same time, and a sublime water mirror. The grand Médicis-style Pavillon is also well worth a visit! And let's not forget to mention the exceptional collection of bicentenary trees of exotic species, including a gigantic zelkova, a 400-year-old elm from Siberia awarded the "remarkable tree" label in 2013. A beautiful, timeless stroll.
