SLOPING PLANE OF SAINT-LOUIS ARZVILLER
Saint-Louis-Arzviller transverse inclined plane, a boat elevator for crossing the Vosges mountains.
Here's an incredible site that's a must-see on your Moselle getaway. The Saint-Louis-Arzviller inclined plane is a boat elevator that forms part of the Marne-Rhine canal and provides a means of crossing the Vosges mountains. Unique in Europe, this 41° hillside structure is the only transverse-type boat elevator. Its neighbors on the Russian Ienissei and Charleroi-Brussels canals are of longitudinal design. The Arzviller inclined plane does the work of 17 locks over a distance of almost 4 km! It's a great way to save water and help the environment, and these days, it's a constant battle. In just 5 minutes, the boats climb a 45-meter vertical drop. The edifice is breathtaking. It's hard to imagine the size of the machinery that powers it all! In figures: the ferry, which has the dimensions of a traditional lock - 41.50 m by 5.50 m - weighs 900 tonnes. Built between 1964 and 1969, this navigation route is used by some 10,000 boats every year. The most visited engineering structure in Lorraine, the site welcomes no fewer than 140,000 visitors every year. The "Société touristique du Plan incliné" is an association that runs tours of the Inclined Plan, offering visitors a wide range of tourist services to discover the facilities of the structure and its surroundings. For children and adults alike, the program includes guided tours, mini-cruises and speedboats.
