Saint-Étienne Cathedral has earned the town its nickname of "Gothic Toul". Events are held here all year round.
With its majestic towers (65 m high), it is the undisputed pride of Toul. Saint-Étienne Cathedral was built between 1221 and 1500. Its impressive beauty and sheer size are awe-inspiring. Despite its age - over 800 years! -Toul's grande dame is as flamboyant as ever. Its architecture harmoniously blends different styles. Romanesque in plan and Gothic in construction, the building symbolizes the episcopal wealth of Toul and the surrounding region. Framed by a curve, the Christ and Mary Magdalene at its feet are of Toul design. The central clocheton houses a 16th-century bell. A Louis XV organ loft overlooks the main portal. The windows are adorned with lancets and a six-lobed rose. There are also two Renaissance chapels and a Gothic cloister. Toul Cathedral is one of the few cathedrals in France not to belong to the state. After the Concordat of 1801, it remained in the hands of the municipality. It has earned the town its nickname of "Gothic Toul". Events are organized in and around the cathedral throughout the year. These include exhibitions, the Bach Festival, the Salon du Livre and the Medieval Weekend. During the summer season, the building hosts a son et lumières, opens its treasure room and invites you to climb its towers. You can also take part in Quasimodo's "casse-croûte", an unusual lunch between the cathedral's two towers, with a breathtaking 360-degree view over the Moselle.
