MUSEUM OF THE RESISTANCE
A museum where you can learn all about Georges Guingoui, his commitment and how he became involved in the Resistance
Did you know that it was one of the most important maquis in France? A maquis is a group of resistance fighters during the Second World War. The exhibition rooms are dedicated to the 1st Limousin marching brigade of Colonel Guingouin's partisans, to the actions of the maquis, to the horrors of the war, to the crimes of Nazism and those of the militia, and finally to the surrender of Limoges on 21 August 1944. Documents, objects, weapons, costumes and uniforms retrace the Resistance in the region and the important role of women. We learn more about who was the "Great Georges, the first maquisard of France", who lies today in the cemetery of Saint-Gilles-la-Forêt. Each year, temporary collections are also added to the museum.
The permanent collection. The first two rooms focus on the Resistance and the maquis. You will learn all about Georges Guingoui, his commitment and how he became involved in the Resistance. As for the maquis, the rooms evoke its birth, its actions and its daily life. You can also learn more about the role of women in the Resistance, the fighting on Mont Gargan, the tragedies of Tulle and Oradour-sur-Glane... Through objects, photographs and other documents that belonged to the Resistance. The third room focuses on the repression: the French militia, the internment camps in Haute-Vienne or the deportations. Very well done, the museum is instructive and fascinating!
