THE COLLEGIATE CHURCH OF SAINT ETIENNE
A collegiate church with Romanesque and Gothic architecture, featuring three high square floors, glass windows and a Limousin portal.
This beautiful religious building has undergone numerous restorations. The church presents a remarkable composite architecture that mixes Romanesque and Gothic. Originally the church of the chapter of canons, it was installed on the site of a first monastery of which only two bays and the fortified bell tower, covered in chestnut shingles, remain. The latter is composed of three high square floors: the first is a beautiful hall covered with a dome; the second level, with arcatures fitted with sound shades, houses the bells; the third is a simple platform, added in the 15th century, probably as a fortification. The Gothic Limousin portal with capital friezes stretches across its entire width. The Gothic choir is illuminated by sixteen stained glass windows, made in the second half of the 15th century, which form one of the most beautiful stained-glass windows in Limousin, classified as a historic monument.
