THE SAINT-JEAN DOOR

Imposing monument emblematic of the city, the main access to the city in the Middle Ages, the Saint-Jean gate was built in the 13th century, during the reconstruction of the ramparts. Its loopholes, corner turrets and machicolations bear witness to its defensive role. La Souterraine still has another monumental gate, that of Puycharraud, also called the Portal.
