VIADUC DE LA TARDES
Emblematic of the eastern Creuse region, this metal bridge was built between 1882 and 1885 by Gustave Eiffel for the Paris-Ussel line. 250 m long and 90 m high, it collapsed during construction on a stormy night, marking a rare failure for the engineer, who drew useful lessons for the Eiffel Tower. The railroad line is now closed, but the viaduct will soon be brought back to life by a greenway: walkers and cyclists will enjoy a spectacular view. Until then, the best place to enjoy it is from the vantage point of the village of Châtelet.
