The church of Sainte-Quitterie, a Unesco World Heritage site, is located high above the town.
Listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco, the church of Sainte Quitterie is located high above the town. According to legend, the martyrdom of Saint Quitterie, a Visigoth princess who refused to renounce the Christian faith, took place in Aire around 477. She was the source of a deep-rooted cult and of the passage through the town of pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. It is said that she was beheaded by her spurned fiancé, the beautiful woman having vowed her virginity to God. She is said to have carried her head to the hill of Le Mas, where the church now stands.

visite passionnante
cette église romane (mais maintes fois remaniée ) et la crypte très ancienne (vestiges paléochrétiens) en dessous nécessitent une visite guidée. Et c'est justement ce qui est proposé, mais il faut au prélable contacter l'office de tourisme d'Aire sur l'Adour afin de s'inscrire. Aucune déception possible

sur les hauteurs de la ville, à une dizaine de minutes du centre. édifice de style gothique très austère et dépouillé. crypte non accessible en raison de travaux.
