THE ORGAN SITE
This unique site in the Pyrenees and in France has become a true epitome of the Roussillon
Mother Nature works wonders! It took her nearly 5 million years to carve the soft rock of this remarkable site. Just 2 km north of Ille-sur-Têt on the road from the granite plateau of Fenouillèdes towards Montalba, in the middle of the garrigue, the rocks shaped by time and erosion give astonishing fairy chimneys, towers of soft rock, dominated by harder terraces. On the physical and geomorphological level, the site of the Organs illustrates the mechanisms of the intense erosion that has been taking place since the Quaternary on the paleo-alluvial departures of the Têt. In addition to the geological specificity, the place exudes a certain magic, an impression of bathing in fantasy. This site, unique in the Pyrenees and in France, with its small canyon shapes carved by the wind and the water, the Canigó in the background, and all this palette in shades of yellow, red and ochre in a raw light, has become a true image of Epinal du Roussillon. The place is perfectly well maintained, a series of paths and its explanatory panels lead you from one curiosity to another. You should allow at least a good hour for the visit, take the time to take photos and simply marvel at this natural work of art. Please bring trainers or walking shoes because don't forget, we are in the middle of nature and the paths are stony. Finally, don't hesitate to continue north by car to discover sumptuous views of the plain and the Canigó.
