THE BOOK
One of the most beautiful cloisters in France, built from the century in the tradition of sculpture Roussillon.
It must be agreed, bishops had taste! A true gem, considered to be one of the most beautiful in France. Built from the 12th century in the purest tradition of the Roussillon sculpture, it consists of a Romanesque part – the south gallery –, and a Gothic one – the three other sides. The beautiful capitals, carved into blue-veined white marble, consist among other things of fantastic animals, many plant and floral decors but also biblical characters among whom Adam and Eve, of an exceptional finesse. The capital number 12, called Creation, is undoubtedly the centrepiece of the place. An archaeology museum in the cloister has remains from various sites of Elne, dating from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages. "Prehistory and size of the stone" workshops are held twice a week.
