The edifice sits atop a steep-sided rocky hill. Built in the 10th century and restored in the 19th century, it remains the most archaic example of a medieval fortress in the Roussillon region, having undergone very few alterations until its restoration. Situé sur les hauteurs de Castelnou, un des plus beaux villages de France, cet ancien château féodal remanié au siècle dernier offre une vue sur le mont Canigou et sur la région alentour.
