A superb arch, with superb medallions, built in place of one of the gates of the old city wall in Montpellier.
The emblem of the city, this gateway was erected at the end of the 17th century at the instigation of the Sun King. Designed by architect François d'Orbay (a pupil of Mansart), the arch was built in place of one of the gates in the city's old ramparts. The façade features superb medallions depicting the King striking down an eagle (Empire) and a lion (England). On the more peaceful side, a trio of figures symbolizes the Canal du Midi, linking the Mediterranean and Atlantic oceans. From up here, the panorama is splendid.

Histoire et point de vue
L'arc de triomphe de Montpellier se situe en haut de l'avenue FOCH. Si vous continuez un peu vous pourrez entrer dans le Peyrou et profiter d'une vue à 180° de Montpellier. Amoureux et amis se retrouve ici pour se détendre;

Très beau site !
Et oui à Montpellier aussi nous avons notre arc de triomphe ! Il se trouve sur la belle avenue Foch et non loin il y a le parc du Peyrou ! Un must-see à Montpellier.

un incontournable de Montpellier. Si vous prenez la visite guidée de la ville à l'office de tourisme, vous aurez la chance de pouvoir monter sur le toit de l'arc de triomphe et de voir la ville mais également les monts qui entourent la ville.
