VILLAGE OF LA SALVETAT-SUR-AGOÛT

In a mountainous landscape that is already that of the Massif Central, La Salvetat-sur-Agoût camps on a promontory surrounded by a river. Its name alone sums up the double origin of the village. La Salvetat is the medieval salvation. An area protected by the church which attracts peasants clearing land around an abbey or monastery, guaranteeing a security and freedom that no longer ensures the violent world of feudalism. Agoût is in langue d'oc the water essential to life. Faith and water have marked the destiny of the village. Faith is that of the monks clearing the mountain or that of the pilgrims interrupting their march towards Compostela to adore a black Virgin. Water is that of the rus and the mills before becoming that of the lakes or that which, bottled from now on, is the future of La Salvetat. Its past is offered to the visitor with the parish church of 1868, the polychrome wooden Christ, the church of Saint-Etienne-de-Cavell or d'Entraygues (12th and 16th centuries). For relaxation, the lake of Raviège offers its waters full of fish to fishermen, lovers of water sports and walks.
