THE ROCK OF THE ORATORIES

On the heights of Gignac, 14 chapels are arranged in staggered rows. These similar chapels were built from 1672 onwards. The first was built by the Récollet Fathers, who were in charge of the chapel. The other chapels were built by parishioners in honor of Jesus, St. John the Baptist and St. Joseph. In the ^18th century, other chapels were added thanks to the generous donations and piety of wealthy Hérault families. It wasn't until the ^19th century that this string of oratories was transformed into a Way of the Cross.
